What To Do If Your IPhone Is Lost Or Stolen
It’s a sad fact, but iPhones do get lost or stolen. Whether you left it in a taxi or it was pickpocketed, it’s a major pain to lose your phone – and all your contacts, photos and other data.
If you have iCloud set up on your iPhone, you can use the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature to track down your device, lock it remotely or even erase all the data to protect your privacy.
If you don’t have iCloud, or ‘Find My iPhone’ isn’t helping, there are still some things you can do to try and get your phone back.
1. Call your iPhone
The first thing to do is call your iPhone. If it’s just lost somewhere in your house or office, this should help you track it down. If it’s been stolen, the thief may answer and you can try to negotiate the return of your phone. (Although, we wouldn’t recommend getting too confrontational!)
2. Check social media
If you’ve got your iPhone’s lock screen set to display your social media information, someone who finds your phone may try to contact you that way. So it’s worth checking Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and any other social media accounts you have set up on your phone.
3. Use ‘Find My Friends’
If you and the person who has your iPhone are both signed up to Apple’s ‘Find My Friends’ service, you may be able to track down the phone’s location.
4. Check with your network
If your iPhone is lost or stolen, you should contact your network provider as soon as possible. They may be able to block your phone so it can’t be used on their network, making it less attractive to thieves. They may also be able to help you track down your phone if it’s turned on and connected to a mobile network.
5. Report it to the police
If you think your iPhone has been stolen, you should report it to the police. They may be able to help you track down the phone and the person who has it.
6. Erase your data
If you’re sure your iPhone is gone for good, you can remotely erase all the data on it to protect your privacy. To do this, you’ll need to sign in to your iCloud account and use the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature.
Losing your iPhone is a major pain, but hopefully these tips will help you get it back.
